The original opera, Jianzhen's Voyages East to Japan, relates the story of an eminent Buddhist monk, Jianzhen, who lived from 688 to 763 during the Tang Dynasty(618-907), and illustrates his missionary journey which was filled with hardship and disparity as well as how eventually his mission was completed breaking through geological and cultural barriers.  In Japan, Jianzhen is known as Ganjin.  He became the symbol of cultural exchange between China and Japan.  The story was debuted to American audiences on June 8th and 9th at Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Los Angeles, US.

The show was directed by Xing Shimiao, with Sheng Xiaoying as stage art designer and Wu Wei as lighting designer.  Golden Sea, as lighting provider, supplied three models of products V3000P, V2500S and GLW370Z to illuminate the “Voyage”.

The opera is divided into six scenes: crossing the illusory sea, crossing the willing sea, crossing the losing sea, crossing the consciousness sea, crossing the sea of heart and crossing the sea of intelligence.

"Although the story of the opera took place in the East, we hope to transfer the value of the story across the Pacific Ocean, to the West. In doing so, we hope to improve Sino-US relations, and play a greater role in cultural exchanges between the American and the Chinese people," said Zheng Zeyun, president of China-Jiangsu Performance Arts Group Co Ltd.

The troupe will then move on to New York's David H. Kotch Theater at Lincoln Center for two shows on June 22 and 23.
